Sporting Kansas City homegrown forward Salloi remains in contention for his first Hungary cap at the senior level when the Magyars welcome Greece for their second UEFA Nations League clash on Tuesday at Groupama Arena in Budapest. Kickoff is set for 1:45 p.m. CT with a live stream on ESPN+.
Hungary, Finland, Greece and Estonia comprise Group C2 in the inaugural UEFA Nations League, with a double-round-robin seeing each team play six times between now and November. The first-place finisher will earn promotion to League B for the 2020-21 UEFA Nations League, while the last-place team will drop to League D.
A 22-year-old product of the Sporting KC Academy, Sall oi has represented Hungary four times in 2019 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying, notably notching a goal and an assist in a 2-0 win over Cyprus last November. He was an unused substitute on Saturday as Hungary fell 1-0 to Finland in their UEFA Nations League opener at Tampere Stadium in Tampere, Finland.
Salloi, who leads MLS homegrown players with 16 combined goals (nine) and assists (seven) in all competitions this season, is one of five forwards on Hungaryâs roster. The most accomplished striker in the squad is 30-year-old Adam Szalai, who has 15 goals in 46 career caps. No. 51 in the latest FIFA rankings, upstart Hungary competed at UEFA Euro 2016 in France, their first European Championship appearance since 1972. Nine spots above the Magyars are No. 42 Greece, who shocked the world as Euro 2004 champions but have failed to replicate anything close to said achievement since then.
Salloi will return to Sporting KC following Tuesday's matchup in Budapest and figures to be available for Saturday's showdown between Sporting KC and the San Jose Earthquakes at Avaya Stadium.
